About Menace

A Scotsman with a free beer..Hi, my name is Pete and Menace is my blog/portfolio, presently I reside in Wellington, New Zealand London and am a freelance Web Designer/Developer.

Work

I’ve been working on the web since 1997 and in that time I’ve had a diverse range of roles, from ‘Web Graphics Designer’ to ‘Web Services Team leader’ and even been the geek in between. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the largest and smallest organisations in New Zealand, from doing simple HTML updates, creating e-learning modules, leading information architecture projects and building web applications.

I also helped set up AltSpace, New Zealand’s first coworking space, which is like a serviced office, only better.

Have a look at my LinkedIn profile if you’re into that sort of thing. If you’re interested in chatting about a web project or just like the sound of your keyboard clacking contact me, I usually don’t bite.

Other Professional Involvement

Some how I agreed to create examples for the NZ Government Web Standards Version 1.0. It’s a work in progress, so comments and suggestions are always welcome.

I created (or at least patched up) most of the back-end of ‘For the Masses‘. In pretty simple terms I’ve created and maintained a content management system, mailing list system, photo gallery and web forum in PHP and MySQL for what is ‘New Zealand’s premiere design portal’.

I was once called ’some bright spark’ by Russell Brown during his 2006 Webstock presentation for running the W3C validation Service over the Netguide finalists in 2004. I did it again for the 2005 and 2007 finalists.

Occasionally, I’ve written (or co-wrote) articles for ProDesign, the DINZ offical magazine and A List Apart (Print to Preview). Presented at TUANZ e-vision forums on Accessibility and was on a panel discussion during the TUANZ Business Internet Conference about the e-government web standards. I’ve also once or twice been quoted in TUANZ Topics (Ticked Off [PDF]) and netguide.

I was a beta tester for Macromedia Contribute (from 2003) and Captivate (from 2004) until the merger with Adobe (sometime around 2005).

Also, every now and again I post silly things on my ‘experimental’ site interface-7, the most popular of course being the Toni Marsh Soundboard.

Of course when I’m not obsessing about web design, I can be found scaring small children with my Alaskan malamute, Fenris.

What’s with the name?

Usually, with a big grin on their faces, more than one colleague or co-worker has called me a menace. Some people would have been offended, I took it as a term of endearment.

Now at this point, since it’s the very end of the page, I should note that nothing written here does not represent the opinions or views of any of my past, present or future employers, clients, organisations I may (loosely) be affiliated with, breakfast, kindly old uncles with lots of money, colleagues or co-workers unless explicated stated.
